On Encryption and Data Security

The Washington Post's Greg Miller has written a gripping story about Crypto AG, an encryption company with a legacy going back to World War II, before the era of silicon chips and software, when encryption was  accomplished using mechanical hardware. Reads like a political thriller.

I value my privacy and do my best to insure digital security by using a Password Manager / Digital Wallet and VPN on my Macs and iOS devices. The ‘gotcha’ headline had me wondering if privacy even exists anymore? The meaning of the word ‘privacy’ itself has changed in our brave new online subscription culture.

The Password Manager / Digital Wallet I use is made by a Canadian company. According to Miller’s WaPost article, Canada is part of “The vaunted “Five Eyes,” a long-standing intelligence pact involving the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada."

Miller talks about the gullibility of foreign nations in purchasing encryption hardware from Crypto AG, the exception being the Chinese and Russians, who were rightly worried about purchasing encryption hardware from the west.

I wonder if today it's the Chinese and Russians who are laughing?
