Informative article from Vox/recode describes how the 'Global Privacy Control' has evolved, and describes the different approaches taken by Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome.

You don't have to limit yourself to these two browsers, though. Mozilla Firefox and Opera are also adding stronger privacy controls. 

Opera in particular has cool social media integration with Facebook, Twitter, What's App, and Instagram; a VPN integrated within the browser, and other features.
