Password Managers & Digital Wallets in 2020

We are big advocates of using a Password Manger / Digital Wallet.

Tom's Hardware, which discusses Apple technology but is more Windows and other platform focused, recently updated their review of the best of these tools in 2020. I swear by 1Password, which came in at #4. Note the 1Password review opens with "1Password provides a better experience on Mac and iOS users than on Android or Windows users" before going on to diss the User Interface.

1Password is feature rich and flexible, which can translate to confusing and complicated to light-tech users. It's very easy to create custom fields and sections. You can have multiple URLs for the same set of credentials. For example, if you are a user of more than one online product from the same vendor, and use the same credentials, you can have one entry for both. Say you use Quickbooks Online and Turbo Tax. You could have an 'Intuit' record in 1Password, that has links to Quickbooks Online and Turbo Tax. Very easy.

I stopped using Dashlane because it kept creating redundant entries from the same company website, it also tended to get in the way and didn't always fill in the right credentials.

For those using an iPhone or iPad with a Windows PC, LastPass looks to be a strong contender.

In March of this year, Tom's Hardware did an article on the vulnerabilities of password managers, highlighting LastPass and 1Password in the headline. However, these vulnerabilities were more on the Windows platform. If you live in the Apple ecosystem, it is inherently more secure. Dashlane fared worst in this review, 1Password best.

And while we're at it, if you want more security, consider a VPN.
